Training module
Low-bandwidth and offline teaching strategies
Mga estratehiya sa pagtuturo nang mabagal o walang internet
Keep technology-integrated lessons running when the connection is slow or gone: offline apps, printable packs, phone-friendly materials and this site's offline mode.
- Time
- 30 minutes
- For
- Teachers in schools with intermittent connectivity or during Alternative Learning Modalities
- Tools
- GeoGebra, Desmos, Spreadsheet, Presentation
You will be able to
- Prepare a lesson so that every digital activity has an offline equivalent.
- Use this site's offline mode and print views to produce learner packs.
- Reduce data use for learners who connect by prepaid mobile data.
Module
Plan for the worst connection in the room
Assume at least one group has no data. Every digital activity needs a paper or offline version that teaches the same idea: Desmos sliders become a set of printed graph cards; a Sheets payroll becomes a worksheet with a calculator; a Jamovi histogram becomes a tally chart on the board.
Apps that work offline
- GeoGebra apps (Graphing, Geometry, 3D) run fully offline once installed.
- Desmos keeps working while the tab is open; load it before class.
- Jamovi is a desktop program and never needs internet after installation.
- Spreadsheet apps on phones (and LibreOffice on computers) work offline.
- This site: pages you have opened, including lesson plans and training modules, stay available without a connection. Open them once on Wi-Fi and they are saved on the device.
Printable packs
ElaborateLesson plans, worksheets and training modules on this site have a print view: use the Print / Save as PDF button, choose A4 or Letter, black and white. A weekly pack of one lesson summary, one practice set and one answer key per learner is cheap to photocopy and survives power cuts.
Cut data use for learners
- Share text and PDFs, not videos. A one-page PDF is under 200 KB; a five-minute video is 50–100 MB.
- Use the site in Filipino or English with large text; it loads no fonts or scripts from outside the site.
- Send links to prerendered pages (lessons, training) rather than screenshots; the page is smaller and stays readable on any screen.
- Ask the school to schedule a 'download hour' on the school Wi-Fi for learners to cache materials.
During an Alternative Learning Modality
ExtendCombine printed modules with short SMS or group-chat check-ins. Use the practice sets' answer keys for self-checking, and collect photos of worked solutions rather than typed answers. Keep the diagnostic test on paper and enter only scores, never learner names, into any online tool.
Try it
- Take next week's plan and write the offline equivalent for every digital activity.
- Open a lesson plan and a training module on a phone, switch the phone to airplane mode, and confirm they still open.
- Assemble and print a one-week learner pack: summary, practice set, answer key.
