Scenario and worked example

Padala day

Engage

Every 15th, Tita Mila in Riyadh sends 2,000 riyals. Her sister compares two remittance apps: one charges a flat ₱150 fee at ₱15.33 per riyal, the other has 'no fee' but pays ₱15.20 per riyal. Which puts more pesos in the family's hands?

Worked example

Explain
App A: 2,000×15.33−150=30,510\text{App A: } 2{,}000 \times 15.33 - 150 = 30{,}510App B: 2,000×15.20=30,400\text{App B: } 2{,}000 \times 15.20 = 30{,}400App A is better by 110 pesos\text{App A is better by } 110 \text{ pesos}

Two directions of conversion

Elaborate

Pesos from foreign currency: multiply by the rate. Foreign currency from pesos: divide by the rate. Keep track of units as you would with metres and centimetres.

PHP=USD×57.50USD=PHP57.50\text{PHP} = \text{USD} \times 57.50 \qquad \text{USD} = \frac{\text{PHP}}{57.50}

When the peso weakens

Extend

A rate rising from ₱55 to ₱57.50 per dollar means each dollar buys more pesos: good for families receiving remittances, bad for importers and for students paying fees abroad.

Discuss in class

  1. Why does a 'no fee' service still make money?
  2. If the peso strengthens to ₱52 per dollar, how much less does a US$400 remittance deliver?
  3. Which is the larger cost on a US$300 remittance: a ₱150 flat fee or a 0.5% worse rate?

Problems

  1. Problem 1 Basic

An OFW sends US$500 home when the exchange rate is ₱57.50 per dollar. How many pesos does the family receive before fees?

    Show step-by-step solution
    1. 500×57.50=28,750500 \times 57.50 = 28{,}750 pesos.

    Answer: 28750 ₱

  2. Problem 2 Standard

A family wants to send ₱20,000 to a student abroad. At ₱57.50 per US dollar, how many dollars is that? Round to the nearest cent.

    Show step-by-step solution
    1. Divide pesos by the rate: 20,000÷57.50≈347.82620{,}000 \div 57.50 \approx 347.826.
    2. About US$347.83.

    Answer: 347.83 US$

  3. Problem 3 Standard

The mid-market rate is ₱57.50 per dollar, but a remittance company pays out at ₱57.20. How many pesos does the family lose on a US$300 remittance because of the lower rate?

    Show step-by-step solution
    1. At mid-market: 300×57.50=17,250300 \times 57.50 = 17{,}250.
    2. At the company's rate: 300×57.20=17,160300 \times 57.20 = 17{,}160.
    3. Difference: 9090 pesos, a hidden fee of about 0.5%.

    Answer: 90 ₱

  4. Problem 4 Basic

A domestic worker in Saudi Arabia sends 2,000 riyals at ₱15.33 per riyal. Find the peso amount.

    Show step-by-step solution
    1. 2,000×15.33=30,6602{,}000 \times 15.33 = 30{,}660 pesos.

    Answer: 30660 ₱

  5. Problem 5 Challenge Non-routine

Last year the rate was ₱55.00 per dollar; this year it is ₱57.50. An OFW sends the same US$400 monthly. By what percentage did the peso amount the family receives increase? Round to two decimal places.

    Show step-by-step solution
    1. Last year: 400×55=22,000400 \times 55 = 22{,}000; this year: 400×57.50=23,000400 \times 57.50 = 23{,}000.
    2. Increase: 1,0001{,}000; percentage =1,000/22,000≈4.55%= 1{,}000/22{,}000 \approx 4.55\%.
    3. The percentage equals the change in the rate itself: 2.50/55≈4.55%2.50/55 \approx 4.55\%.

    Answer: 4.55 %
